Review: Kamal Star Lumia 950 Replacement Battery

Added: 18.01.2018 9:15 | 1 views | 0 comments

Possibly THE biggest 'Frequently Asked Question' in the Windows phone world is 'Where can I buy a spare battery for device X?' Yes, we're dealing, in many cases, with phones with replaceable batteries - an admirable attribute but only if you can buy the spares! With this in mind, I'm 'reviewing' a third party Lumia 950 battery here - and it's pretty darned good. Somewhat to my surprise!

Stereo speaker test follow-up (including IDOL 4 Pro)

Added: 16.01.2018 14:59 | 1 views | 0 comments

I've covered smartphone speaker output , but I'm relegating the video below to just a 'Flow' story because, of the five phones tested, only one runs Windows 10 Mobile - the Alcatel IDOL 4 Pro - and the others all run Android. But the comparison is still of interest, as the Windows phone holds up well against the best of the rest of the competition.

Windows 10 Mobile - January 2018 status for all compatible phones

Added: 15.01.2018 22:10 | 2 views | 0 comments

(2017) I published a feature mapping out the road map/state of play for all Windows phones, but since then we've had the full production release of a whole new branch of Windows 10 (Mobile), and even a new phone. Not exactly a maelstrom of activity, but certainly worth taking quarterly stock of models and branches supported!

Mini-review: Sound Recorder Hi-Res UWP

Added: 29.12.2017 20:54 | 5 views | 0 comments

There have been many audio recording applications for Windows Phone over the years - I even did , around three years ago. Then there's the unimpressive Voice Recorder that's built into Windows these days. But what we have here is a bona fide Windows 10 UWP application in the field. Not only that, but Sound Recorder Hi-Res is full of bells and whistles. Don't try and record loud music though - there's no gain control!

Mini-review: Scarlett Mysteries: Cursed Child

Added: 27.12.2017 10:25 | 6 views | 0 comments

Continuing my holiday series of mini-reviews of games for Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile, here's the latest 'hidden object' classic from Artifex Mundi. Lush production values and flawless game play if you're into immersive puzzlers, Scarlett Mysteries: Cursed Child is available in both full and trial forms in the Windows Store.

The Alcatel IDOL 4 Pro on sale, £126 off in the UK Store

Added: 26.12.2017 17:30 | 6 views | 0 comments

The Alcatel IDOL 4 Pro has been the only brand new Windows 10 Mobile smartphone in the world (this year) until the showed up. But it's still highly desirable if you're invested in the Windows 10 (and Windows Phone) ecosystem, has stereo speakers to die for, and.... is now on significant offer at Microsoft's UK Store. £126 off, bringing the price down to £294 inc VAT. Snap this one up if you've been on the fence, etc, after .

Review: Yaht 3D UWP

Added: 18.12.2017 7:23 | 5 views | 0 comments

An almost perfectly implemented game, Yaht 3D has been around for a while in Windows Phone 8.1 form - and implemented as a UWP application, bringing in Windows PCs and Hololens, etc. Dice rolling super-realistically, scoring with virtual pencil rings, and so on. Well worth a download for Christmas if you're after a graphically sophisticated game with quick yet thought-provoking gameplay.

Head to head: Alcatel IDOL 4 Pro vs Nokia 8

Added: 13.12.2017 16:31 | 7 views | 0 comments

With the Nokia 8 arriving in for review, the highest specced of the 'new Nokias' (running Android), I wondered which Windows phone to compare it to. I settled in the end for the current Alcatel IDOL 4 Pro, though the Nokia nostalgist in me had me tempted for a while to go really 'old school'. See below for my thinking. And for the full blow-by-blow device comparison.

Festive update for Royal Bank of Scotland UWP

Added: 11.12.2017 11:57 | 8 views | 0 comments

Available for both Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile, I've heard good things about the latter recently. And, heading for the Store even though I'm not a RBS customer, I did note that the Windows 10 UWP application was showing a festive changelog. So, as nothing more than a shout-out on AAWP (though comments from customers are welcome below), here's the official RBS application - they at least are staying faithful to Windows 10 Mobile, it seems.

Windows on phones stymied by moving goalposts... just like Symbian

Added: 06.12.2017 7:23 | 6 views | 0 comments

The problem with the tech world is, from an operating system provider's point of view, that the goalposts keep moving. These perambulating pieces of wood killed Symbian, killed Blackberry, have almost killed Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile, and, one day, may even kill iOS as we know it today. With hindsight, it's all too clear, but at the time OS coders were making sensible choices.
